Health of the High Street

BIRA – British Independent Retailers Association – has launched a survey to gather evidence about our use and need for our High Street shops:  Their HealthoftheHighStreet survey is at

75% of UK shops are small independent retailers: although their difficulties may not get the publicity of large chain store closures, their loss is felt by local people.

Media experts say that retailing is in the middle of a ‘revolution’; that our High Streets are in ‘intensive care’. Yet retailing/wholesaling is still a larger contributor to national GDP than banking, and employs over 4 million people.
