Workplace Chaplaincy Derbyshire have started a new chaplaincy service to Sports Direct HQ and Distribution centre in Shirebrook.
Revd Karen Bradley, a new Church of England Vicar, wanted to find a way to serve those who worked at Sports Direct. Some thought the church should protest against the employer. Others wanted a different way of engaging.
Ecumenical colleagues decided to try to set up a space for Sports Direct staff to speak and be heard, and managers at Sports Direct welcomed the proposal. The chaplaincy hopes to grow with more volunteers and time.
The chaplains provide a listening and support service, and also provide opportunities for prayer and reflection. Following the London terrorist attacks they set up a prayer tree, to which the staff attached ribbons on which they had written prayers.
